Chamber Music: A Special Genre

We love chamber music at Point CounterPoint – listening to it, learning about it, and most of all playing it together. Orchestral string instruments and piano are particularly near and dear to us, and they’ve always been part of our program.

Campers at Point CounterPoint are immersed in music, and placed in an environment where they learn and grow as leaders through music. Each camper receives multiple lessons with an elite professional teacher on their instrument, working intensely on technique, artistry, and repertoire. Campers are assigned by the session directors to ensemble groups, with repertoire that is challenging, but appropriate for their skill and experience levels.

Our faculty members coach ensemble rehearsals, but it’s expected that the campers will rehearse on their own (without a coach) in many rehearsals. This teaches leadership and communication skills, and it’s great for building friendships, too!

Practicing Before Camp

Our session directors assign music at least a month before camp starts. It’s expected that campers arrive at PCP knowing their parts, and ready to rehearse with their ensembles. Rehearsals begin on Monday, the first full day of camp, and continue through the entire session.

Performances at PCP

Campers have two opportunities to perform while at camp: first, in our Mid-Session Concert, which is only attended by fellow campers and their teachers (and is livestreamed to family and friends). The Mid-Session Concert is for “works in progress” and most ensembles will play only part of what they’ve rehearsed.

At the end of each session, all campers perform in a Final Concert. This is a public concert in nearby Salisbury, Vermont, and we get regular audience members from the community! Our campers perform to show off their hard work, and families and friends are invited to attend this closing event.

Faculty Concerts

Besides campers, our faculty also presents a public concert every session. These concerts are featured events in the region, and are attended by many community members excited to hear professional chamber musicians perform well-loved classics as well as new and exciting works.
