About
The Prelude Session is a one week camp for string players ages 8-13 designed to introduce both a chamber music experience and a short time away from home. Those with no ensemble experience,as well as more advanced players, participate in chamber groups, orchestra, and chorus.
The session starts on Sunday with campers arriving between 2-4pm. The session ends Saturday afternoon with a concert by all of the chamber groups and the orchestra.
Mornings at Prelude are devoted to lessons, coachings and rehearsals, with a structured break. Afternoons are spent in recreational activities, and evenings are divided between music (including a faculty concert), games, campfires and cabin activities. Each camper has a private lesson during the week to help with chamber music repertoire. Generally there is not time for lessons on solo music, although campers may certainly practice solo repertoire at camp.
No audition is required for Prelude: groups are carefully matched based on teacher recommendations, and the coordinator will consult teachers as needed for additional information. A list of chamber music repertoire studied at last year’s Prelude session is available here.
